The Moravian College men’s lacrosse team finished off its 2010 season with a 17-12 non-conference win over Neumann University Saturday afternoon at Rocco Calvo Field to snap a nine-match losing streak.
Junior midfielder David Bennett, pictured at right, score 1:46 into the match to give the Greyhounds a quick 1-0 lead. The teams went back-and-forth for the rest of the quarter with Bennett giving Moravian a 6-5 lead with a goal as the horn sounded at the end of the first. The Greyhounds took the lead for good on a goal by senior midfielder Robert Devine with 5:54 left in the second quarter, and Moravian had a 10-7 lead at halftime. Both squads were able to manage just one goal in the third quarter before Moravian out-scored the Knights, 6-4, in the final 15 minutes.
Bennett and Devine each had four goals and two assists to lead the Greyhounds while junior attack Christopher Mohapp added four goals and an assist. Junior midfielder Daniel Kane contributed two goals and an assist while sophomore attack Sean McInerney had a goal and an assist. Junior midfielder David Forte and freshman midfielder Brian Heffern each had goals for Moravian while sophomore defender Jesse Peterson and sophomore midfielder Christopher Stanton each had one assist.
Devine, pictured at left, also led Moravian with seven ground balls while winning eight of 15 face-offs. Freshman midfielder Michael Falco added four ground balls while Peterson had four ground balls and three caused turnovers for the Greyhounds. Sophomore defender Raymond Allocco had three ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers while junior defender Michael Santos had three ground balls.
Senior attack Dominic Collichio led Neumann with four goals and three assists while senior midfielder Matt Toth contributed three goals. Sophomore midfielder Tom Hedrick had two goals and four assists for the Knights while junior attack Justin Mailloux had two goals and freshman midfielder Mark Consolo had a goal and two assists. Senior midfielder Steve Lis was 21-for-32 on face-offs and had four ground balls for Neumann while sophomore defender Ryan O’Shea and Consolo each had five ground balls.
Moravian had a 51-37 advantage in shots and a 41-35 edge in ground balls while the Knights won 231-of-32 face-offs. Greyhound junior goalie Benjamin Leavy had 17 saves and five ground balls while Neumann freshman goalie Andrew Neubauer had 19 saves and seven ground balls.

The Moravian College men’s lacrosse team dropped its final road match of the 2010 season, falling to Immaculata University, 8-5, in non-conference action Wednesday evening.
The Mighty Macs scored midway through the first quarter and led 2-1 after 15 minutes. The Greyhounds had the contest tied at 3-3 after a goal from junior midfielder Robert Devine, pictured at right, with 8:59 to go in the second quarter, but Immaculata netted the last two goals of the half to hold a 5-3 halftime lead. The Mighty Macs also scored the only two goals in the third quarter to have a 7-3 advantage after 45 minutes of action.
Midfielder Tom Hartney led Immaculata with two goals and an assist while midfielder Joe Keller tossed in two goals. Mike Boyd added a goal and an assist while attack Ryan Cipriani, defender Brad Hamlet and Jordan Smith each had goals for the Mighty Macs. Mike Nesci had four ground balls for Immaculata while Brendan Dinneen had an assist and four ground balls. Midfielder Stone Gahagan was seven-for-17 on face-offs.
Devine led Moravian with three goals while junior attack David Bennett and sophomore attack Nelson Knusden each had goals. Freshman attack Brian Heffern and sophomore defender Raymond Allocco both had an assist for the Greyhounds with Allocco adding eight ground balls and three caused turnovers. Devine won eight-of-13 face-offs and also had eight ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers.
Moravian had a 35-27 advantage in shots, a 40-33 edge in ground balls and won ten-of-17 face-offs in the contest. Greyhound junior goalie Benjamin Leavy had nine saves and a pair of ground balls while Immaculata goalie Andrew Sim had 18 saves, eight ground balls and three caused turnovers.

The Moravian College men’s lacrosse team lost its final Landmark Conference match of the 2010 season, falling to Goucher College, 17-6, on the road Saturday afternoon.
The Gophers netted the first eight goals of the match and led 5-0 after the first quarter and 8-1 at halftime. Goucher pushed its lead to 12-3 after 45 minutes of action.
Attack Kyle Boncaro led Goucher with four goals and five assists while attack Rory Averett added four goals and an assist. Midfielder Jacob Fratella had two goals and three assists for the Gophers while Gavin Loney added two goals. Chris Argonish had a goal and an assist while defender Justin Dunn led Goucher with nine ground balls and seven caused turnovers. Boncaro added four ground balls and four caused turnovers as did David Jadin.

Greyhound junior goalie Benjamin Leavy posted 19 saves to become the second player in school history to surpass 400 career saves while Goucher used three goalies with Chris Stricklin making five saves in the opening half.

The Moravian College men’s lacrosse team lost its final home Landmark Conference match of the season, falling to The University of Scranton, 16-3, at Rocco Calvo Field Wednesday afternoon.
Royal junior midfielder Patrick Cefula won the opening face-off of the match and raced down field for a goal just 5.8 seconds into the match, the first of six goals by Scranton in the first quarter. The Royals led 11-1 after the first half, and Scranton had a 15-2 edge after 45 minutes of action.
Sophomore attack Daniel Slade led the Royals with two goals and an assist while freshman attack Taylor Nelson, junior midfielder Sean Milde and junior attack Robert Pantages each had two goals. Junior midfielder JP Barton, sophomore midfielder Mike Rufo, junior attack Thomas Alati and junior midfielder Keenan Dowd each added a goal and an assist for Scranton. Cefalu was six-for-nine on face-offs while sophomore defender Owen Eastwood led the Royals with four ground balls. Junior midfielder Brendan Gray was eight-for-12 on face-offs.
Junior attack Christopher Mohapp, pictured above, netted two goals for the Greyhounds while junior midfielder Daniel Cress scored once. Junior midfielder David Forte had four ground balls and won four-of-11 face-offs.
Scranton had a 36-17 advantage in shots and won 14-of-21 face-offs while both squads collected 26 ground balls. Moravian junior goalie Benjamin Leavy had ten saves and a match high seven ground balls while the Royals used three goalies with freshman Ben Worthington starting and making two saves before leaving with an injury five minutes into the second quarter. Junior keeper Jeremy Dowiak had one save in 24 minutes of action while junior goalie Adam Gershowitz had two saves in the fourth quarter for Scranton.

The Moravian College men’s lacrosse team dropped a 15-7 Landmark Conference decision at The United States Merchant Marine Academy Saturday afternoon.
The Greyhounds jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a pair of goals from sophomore attack Sean McInerney, pictured at right, in the first five minutes of the match. However, the Mariners scored the next eight goals including four to lead 4-2 after the first quarter. USMMA had an 8-4 halftime lead, and the Mariners netted the first five goals of the second half to hold a 14-5 advantage after 45 minutes of action.
Brian Flannery led USMMA with four goals and two assists while Adam Jerlow had a hat trick. Zach Gray and Sean Zakow each had two goals and an assist for the Mariners while Phil Walker and Tyler Spaulding each had a goal and an assist. Patrick McLaughlin was seven-for-16 on face-offs while Sean Sheehy was six-for-six with each player grabbing three ground balls.
McInerney led the Greyhounds with four goals while sophomore defender Raymond Allocco and freshmen attacks Ryan Starkman and Thomas Gavaghan each had goals. Junior attack Christopher Mohapp contributed two assists for Moravian while sophomore defender Jesse Peterson had one assist.
USMMA had a 42-36 edge on shots, a 14-11 advantage on ground balls and won 16-of-26 face-offs. Junior Benjamin Leavy had 19 saves for the Greyhounds while the Mariners used three goals with Keegan Boyle adding five saves in 41 minutes of action.

The Moravian College men’s lacrosse team dropped a 17-7 decision to rival Muhlenberg College in non-conference action in Allentown Wednesday evening.
The Mules scored the first three goals before Moravian junior midfielder David Forte scored for the Greyhounds with 9:38 left in the first quarter. Muhlenberg had an 8-3 lead at the end of the first quarter, and the Mules headed into the intermission with an 11-3 lead. Muhlenberg scored five of six goals in the third quarter to lead the match 16-4 after 45 minutes of play.
Sophomore attack Sean McInerney, pictured at right, led the Greyhounds with two goals while junior attacks David Bennett and Christopher Mohapp and junior midfielder Robert Devine each had a goal and an assist. Midfielder Clint Watkins contributed two goals, two assists and three ground balls for the Mules while attack Brian Seibold had two goals and an assist. Doug Rheiner added a goal and an assist for Muhlenberg while six other Mule players each had one goal. Nick Rispoli was also six-for-six on face-offs while defender Matthew Schroeder led Muhlenberg with six ground balls and four caused turnovers.

The Moravian College men’s lacrosse team had a two-goal lead late in the third quarter but Susquehanna University rallied for four straight goals to earn a 9-7 Landmark Conference win over the Greyhounds at Rocco Calvo Field Saturday afternoon in front of nearly 900 fans.
Moravian opened the scoring with the only goal in the first quarter as freshman midfielder Brian Heffern scored just 2:45 into the match. In the second quarter, the teams would trade goals and head to the intermission tied at 4-4. The Greyhounds scored twice to start the third quarter for a 6-4 lead but Susquehanna tied the match with two late goals in the third quarter to knot the score at 6-6 after 45 minutes. The Crusaders took their first lead of the contest 49 seconds into the final quarter and out-scored Moravian, 3-1, in the final 15 minutes.

Freshman midfielder Marcus Cheatham led Susquehanna with eight ground balls and five caused turnovers.

The Moravian College men’s lacrosse team dropped a 12-7 Landmark Conference decision to Drew University at Rocco Calvo Field Wednesday afternoon.
The Rangers scored a pair of goals just ten seconds apart early in the first quarter for a 2-0 lead. Moravian would rally at tie the match at 2-2 on a goal from junior midfielder Robert Devine, pictured at right, with 6:02 on the clock. The point was Devine’s 100th career point at Moravian, the fifth player in school history to reach 100 points. Devine added another goal with 19 seconds left in the first quarter as the teams were tied 3-3 at 15 minutes.
Drew scored the first three goals of the second quarter before Moravian tallied two late scores to head to the intermission down 6-5. The Rangers also out-scored the Greyhound, 3-2, in the third quarter for a 9-7 lead after 45 minutes, and Drew scored the only three goals in the final quarter.

The Moravian College men’s lacrosse team dropped a 10-5 non-conference decision at Ursinus College Thursday evening.
Midfielder Eric Farris gave the Bears a 1-0 lead just 33 seconds into the match but goals from Moravian freshman midfielder Brian Heffern and junior attack David Bennett, pictured at right, gave the Greyhounds a 2-1 lead with 9:18 left in the first quarter. However, Ursinus tallied the next two goals for a 3-2 edge after the first 15 minutes. Moravian junior midfielder Robert Devine scored the first goal of the second quarter to tie the match at 3-3 but Farris scored with 32 seconds before the intermission to give the Bears a 4-3 halftime lead. Ursinus scored six of eight goals in the third quarter for a 10-5 lead, and neither team was unable to find the goal in the last 15 minutes.
Farris finished with four goals for Ursinus while attack David Kraus had two goals and two assists. Brian Weil had a goal and an assist for the Bears while Mike Alfieri, Tom Adelsberger and Tom Walsh each netted one goal. Defender Buddy Ferro had a team high four ground balls for Ursinus while Graig Gallo won four-of-eight face-offs.
Devine led Moravian with two goals and an assist while Bennett, Heffern and sophomore midfielder Joseph Perrino each scored. Sophomore defender Nelson Knusden added an assist for Moravian. The Moravian College men’s lacrosse team opened its 2010 Landmark Conference season with a 14-5 loss at The Catholic University of America Saturday afternoon in Washington, D.C.
The Cardinals scored first on a goal from Jimmy Bitonti before Moravian junior attack Christopher Mohapp, pictured at right, tied the match at 1-1. Catholic led 2-1 at the end of the first quarter but Mohapp tied the match again at 2-2 early in the second quarter. However, the Cardinals would score the next six goals, taking a 4-2 halftime lead, and holding a 12-3 lead after three quarters.
Chris Fuccillo led Catholic with four goals and an assist while Jimmy Sinnott had three goals and an assist. Mark Sacton contributed three goals for the Cardinals while Bitonti had two goals and three assists. Mike Groh added two goals and an assist for Catholic while Tom Scotto led the team with six ground balls while winning 13-of-18 face-offs. Rob Ryan added four caused turnovers and three ground balls.
Sophomore attack David Bennett led the Greyhounds with two goals and an assist while Mohapp netted two goals. Junior midfielder David Forte had a goal for Moravian while junior midfielder Robert Devine and sophomore attack Jacob Harris each had one assist with Devine moving into second in school history with his 38th career assist. Mohapp had a team high three ground balls for the Greyhounds while freshman defender Nathaniel Ferraro had a pair of caused turnovers.

The Moravian College men’s lacrosse team posted its first win of the 2010 season, defeating Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, 11-9, in non-conference action at Rocco Calvo Field Saturday afternoon.
The Greyhounds jumped out to 1 1-0 lead on an unassisted goal from junior midfielder David Forte, pictured at right, just 36 seconds into the match, but the Ospreys answered right back 15 seconds later when senior attack Josh Dybus scored off a pass from senior attack Brendan McCarthy. Forte needed just 18 seconds to put the Greyhounds back in front with a goal assisted by junior attack David Bennett. Neither team scored the rest of the first quarter, and Richard Stockton tied the match 1:30 into the second period when freshman attach Drew Flagler scored from Dybus.
Moravian took the lead for good with 12:07 when sophomore midfielder Nelson Knudsen netted hits first career goal off of a pass from sophomore midfielder Zachary Stein. The Greyhounds scored four straight goals before Dybus scored for the Ospreys with two seconds left in the first half to cut Moravian’s lead to 6-3 at halftime.

Knusden had two goals while Bennett had a goal, an assist and four ground balls. Stanton had one goal while junior midfielder Daniel Cress netted his first collegiate goal for the Greyhounds. Stein, who was four-for-six on face-offs, and junior attack Christopher Mohapp each had assists. Junior defender Michael Santos led the Greyhounds with seven ground balls and five caused turnovers.
Dybus led the Ospreys with three goals and an assist to go with three ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers while senior midfielder Brent Effenberger and junior midfielder Matt Bologno each had two goals. The Moravian College men’s lacrosse team let a three-goal lead slip away in the fourth quarter before falling to host Gwynedd-Mercy College, 12-11 in overtime, in a non-conference contest Wednesday evening.
The Greyhounds opened the scoring with a goal from junior midfielder Robert Devine, pictured at right, and Moravian had a 2-1 lead after 15 minutes of action. Junior midfielder David Forte scored for the Greyhounds with just over three minutes left in the first half to tie the match at 5-5. Moravian scored all three goals in the third quarter to take an 8-5 lead after 45 minutes of action.
The Griffins scored the first five goals of the fourth quarter to take a 10-8 lead. Moravian responded with three goals to retake the lead, 11-10, on a goal from junior attack Christopher Mohapp with just 33 seconds remaining in the contest. Freshman midfielder Dustan Mangin would score the tying goal for Gwynedd-Mercy with four seconds on the clock, and freshman attack Mason Risner scored the winner with 55 seconds left in overtime for the Griffins.

The Moravian College men’s lacrosse team couldn’t make an early lead stand up as the Greyhounds fell to DeSales University, 16-11, in their non-conference home opener at a chilly Rocco Calvo Field Wednesday afternoon.
Moravian scored the first goals of the match, tallies from junior midfielder David Forte and junior attack David Bennett, pictured at right, 19 seconds apart before the Bulldogs scored five in a row to take a 5-2 lead after 15 minutes of action. The Greyhounds added three man-up goals, two from Bennett, and a total of four goals in the second quarter to tie the match at 6-6 at halftime.
DeSales freshman midfielder Whit Bruemmer scored three of his match high seven goals in the third quarter as the Bulldogs led 9-8 after 45 minutes. DeSales ran off five goals to start the fourth quarter including three from sophomore attack Michael Bassani in a span of 23 seconds to take a 14-8 lead. Moravian netted three man-up goals to pull within three goals with 2:22 remaining before DeSales tallied the final two goals of the match.
Bruemmer had seven goals to lead all scorers for the Bulldogs while Bassani added three goals and an assist. Senior midfielder Jarryd Stamatelos had two goals and two assists as he transitioned from playing in goal to in the field for DeSales while senior midfielder Kevin Walker had a team high four assists to go with a goal for DeSales. Walker won 19-of-30 face-offs and added a match high ten ground balls for the Bulldogs while sophomore long stick midfielder Brendan Guerrier had nine ground balls to go with a pair of assists.
Junior midfielder Robert Devine, pictured at left, and Bennett each had three goals and two assists to lead Moravian while Forte added two goals. The three goals give Devine 50 for his career, the seventh player in school history to net 50 career goals. Sophomore attack Sean McInerney contributed to goals for the Greyhounds while junior attack Christopher Mohapp added a goal and two assists. Sophomore long stick midfielder Jesse Peterson also had an assist for the Greyhounds.
Devine led Moravian with five ground balls and five face-off wins while freshman midfielder Michael Falco won six face-offs and added a pair of ground balls. Peterson and sophomore defender Kevin Jordan each had five ground balls for the Greyhounds.
DeSales had a 49-31 edge in shots, a 40-33 edge in ground balls and won 19-of-31 face-offs in the match. Bulldog freshman goalie Jacob Nyenhuis had six saves in his first career start while Moravian junior keeper Benjamin Leavy had 11 saves.

The Moravian College men’s lacrosse match dropped a 20-3 non-conference decision to McDaniel College on the road Saturday afternoon in what was scheduled to be its 2010 home opener but was away due to snow covering Rocco Calvo Field.
The Green Terror scored the first four goals of the match and lead 5-1 after 15 minutes. McDaniel had an 11-2 edge at halftime, and the Green Terror were ahead 16-3 after three quarters. Senior attack Gibbs Preston, sophomore attack DJ Rickels and junior midfielder TJ Willoughby each had four goals and an assist to lead McDaniel while sophomore midfielder Jed Barnes added a goal and two assists.
Junior midfielder Robert Devine, pictured at right, led Moravian with his first two goals of the season, and he added five face-off wins and four ground balls. Sophomore attack Jacob Harris added the Greyhounds’ other goal while freshman midfielder Michael Falco has three ground balls and three face-off wins for Moravian. Junior midfielder Daniel Cress caused two turnovers for the Greyhounds.
The Green Terror had a 51-15 advantage in shots, a 57-27 edge in ground balls and won 18-of-26 face-offs in the match. McDaniel sophomore goalie Brad Motley had two saves in 45 minutes of action while senior goalie Ty Wittelsberger made a save in 13 minutes. Freshman keeper Alec Farrell had two saves in just under two minutes for McDaniel. Moravian junior keeper Benjamin Leavy had nine saves in 30 minutes of action while sophomore goalie Michael Birnbaum had five saves in the second half of the match.

At Montclair State University - Lost 20-5 - Boxscore
The Moravian College men’s lacrosse team opened its 2010 season with a 20-5 non-conference loss at Montclair State University Wednesday afternoon.
The Greyhounds took a 1-0 lead 1:14 into the match when junior attack Christopher Mohapp, pictured at right, netted his first goal of the season. However, Montclair State scored the next six goals and let 6-2 after 15 minutes. Sophomore defender Nelson Knusden also scored in the first quarter for Moravian.
The Red Hawks scored all six goals in the second quarter to lead 12-2 at halftime. Montclair State led 16-3 after three quarters with Moravian junior attack David Bennett scoring a man-up goal off of a pass from Mohapp. The Greyhounds would get two goals in the fourth quarter with freshman midfielder Michael Falco and sophomore midfielder Jesse Peterson each scoring unassisted goals.
Sophomore attack Tyler Meth led Montclair State with six goals and an assist while senior attack Patrick Nann netted three goals. Junior midfielder Kevin Dyer added two goals and an assist for the Red Hawks while junior attack Robert Sinicola had a goal, four assists and four ground balls. Junior attack Mike Corsetto contributed three assists while freshman defender Brian Jernick had a game high six ground balls. Junior midfielder Marc Guido was 12-for-16 on face-offs with four ground balls.
Mohapp led Moravian with a goal and an assist while Peterson, pictured at left, had a team high four ground balls. Peterson, junior defender Michael Santos and sophomore defender Raymond Allocco all had two caused turnovers. Falco added two ground balls for the Greyhounds as did junior midfielder Robert Devine, who was three-for-nine on face-offs. Sophomore midfielder Zachary Stein was three-for-five on face-offs for Moravian with two ground balls.
Greyhound junior goalie Benjamin Leavy had eight saves and a pair of ground balls in 45 minutes of action while sophomore keeper Michael Birnbaum added three saves in 15 minutes. For Montclair State, senior goalie Andrew Rosado had five saves in 48 minutes of action while sophomore Mark Glander has two saves in the final 12 minutes of the match. The Red Hawks had a 41-16 advantage in shots, a 39-21 edge in ground balls and won 16-of-26 face-offs.
